On July 4th, 2024, 13 year old Rose Dieujuste was heading to her friend’s apartment a few buildings over from her apartment – in the same Palmetto Lakeside complex in Orlando Florida to spend Independence day with her, but she never made it to her apartment. Instead she was kidnapped by 28 year old Jerry Dorisme in the stairway of her friend’s apartment and taken to the building’s utility closet where he removed her clothing raped and stabbed her multiple times then left her there dying.
When her friend did not see her coming, she went looking for her, and found her cell phone, shoes and blood on the stairway of her apartment building, and reached out to Rose’s family. Rose’s brother and cousin then came to her apartment and began knocking on doors looking for her, and when they got to the utility closet they found her in the closet naked and bloodied so they called 911 as they attempted CPR, but she was unresponsive.
When officers and emergency medical technicians got to the apartment around 2:30pm they quickly rushed her to a nearby hospital, but her injuries were so severe – she died.
Authorities were able to secure surveillance videos from the complex which showed Jerry following Rose with a knife in his hand, the same 12 inch knife they found at the crime scene, and they later saw him on video surveillance from a nearby store purchasing the knife shortly before assaulting and murdering Rose.
Neighbors in the community also co-operated with police in giving them necessary information, and one witness told investigators he saw a heavy set man leaving the building where Rose was found. But this man was bent on doing the same crime over and over again, as he went back to the complex this past Thursday July 11, and was arrested and charged with first degree felony murder after authorities were notified.
And by the way, this man does have a criminal history spanning 6 years prior to him murdering Rose. He was arrested for lewd and lascivious molestation of a child but that charge was downgraded to aggravated child abuse for which he spent 1 year in prison, and because of that downgrade he was never registered as a sex offender. He has been arrested multiple times on domestic violence charges including battery against a former girlfriend and later violated his restraining order. Authorities were also called some time ago about a man walking the streets with a knife and when deputies arrived he ended up punching 2 of the 3 deputies and was “Baker Acted” or taken in for mental illness check, just a few weeks before this murder occur. However, the State refused to prosecute him in all but 1 case, even though the Sheriff charged him:
According to neighbors this man does not live in the complex and seems to be homeless, walking about in the surrounding area and has been seen in the complex on multiple occasions watching little girls, which made them concerned. He is from Haiti and has been living in the U.S since 2008.
Rose and her brother moved to the U.S from Haiti about a year ago, in search of a better life. They had no idea this would be the outcome. Her brother and cousin who found her in closet speak out:
Several questions were asked of the Sheriff by news reporters at the news briefing, but one question in particular I want to zone in on was this one, “He does have a history and those area may need more patrolling, are you able to provide more patrol so that other predators like this aren’t able to attack?” To which the Sheriff responded, “We do patrol the entire community…but this is a crime that is hard to predict and hard to prevent.”
See full Sheriff’s briefing here.
I do agree with the Sheriff that these types of crimes are hard to predict, but I do not agree they are hard to prevent. And although more patrol will definitely help, each household and the community must take the initiative to protect their children at all times, by being constantly mindful of the dangers that lurks and not letting their children walk alone whether day or night. And neighbors may have to pitch in and look out for each other’s children as was done back in the day, but families and neighbors working together will definitely prevent something like this from happening. And women, find out if pepper spray is legal in your State and ensure you always carry it with you when you are out.
We all have to recognize we are not living in Utopia – and not anything close to Utopia anymore. It’s sad and heartbreaking that a child cannot just walk a few buildings or blocks over by themselves and get to their destination safely, but they cannot. Of course, not all will be assaulted and murdered like this little girl Rose was, but did her parents know this was going to happen to her? No, they didn’t. And that’s the point I’m making! You cannot know what will happen – until it unfortunately does happen, so prevention, prevention, prevention.
Do not allow your kids to walk alone anywhere! Go with them to their destination, then go back and pick them up later. Even if your child is adamant as we all know teens can be, saying, “it’s just a few blocks, I can go on my own”. Let them know the only way they will be going is if you go with them, and return to pick them up later.
And show them stories like this, and explain that no-one knows what’s going to happen until it does, and by then it will be too late.
And the worst part? These evil monsters most times won’t just kill the child, they unleash terror on them torturing them causing insurmountable pain and a horrible death. Prevention please people! For your children’s sake.
The few minutes it will take to go with them and go back for them, will be way worth it – avoiding the alternative of something like this possibly happening and causing you a lifetime of pain and regret. And do not allow anyone to tell you you are helicoptering your children and they will become scared, dysfunctional adults. Your children will be fully functional aware adults, and most importantly they will be safe and free from unnecessary lifetime trauma.
Also let your teens know not to go willingly with them anywhere because 9 out of 10 he’s going to kill them anyway. So take a chance and run scream when they see people around – even dashing in the street if they see a car or cars coming and create a scene. Most of these horrible human beings won’t try to hurt the kids when other people are present, and in the event he has a gun and shoots her she may survive and if she die she would have died escaping the evil acts that would have been perpetrated on her had she obeyed and gone with him somewhere secluded. This diabolical man was able to take this little girl into the utility closet of her friend’s building and perpetrate his horrendous acts on her there.
I don’t know much about mental illness so I can’t comprehensively speak on it, but what I can’t understand is how people who are “mentally unstable” are able to be so cunning and deliberate in the way they carry out these harmful acts.
No longer should anyone be able to say they have mental health issues and get away with murder and lascivious acts. All perpetrators need to be held accountable.
We need to get back to the days when one is either mad or sane. If they are mad, which is having traumatic brain injuries or chemical imbalance in the brain, or anything else that makes the brain malfunction then they are kept away from the rest of society because of course they do not know what they are doing at all times, right?
And if they are sane then they know exactly what they are doing at all times and therefore should be held fully accountable for their actions, whether or not they are experiencing or have experienced any of the other factors that leads to “mental illness” which according to the CDC are:
- Adverse Childhood Experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse (for example, child abuse, sexual assault, witnessing violence, etc.)
- Use of alcohol or drugs
- Having feelings of loneliness or isolation
This man should not have been out here walking the streets and endangering society. He should have been made to pay for his previous crimes, and subsequently be rehabilitated before getting out on the streets.
I say it’s time for all these senseless killings to stop and for all sane people to be held accountable, and all mad or brain impaired people to be safely kept away. No more excuses!
Her brother has setup a Gofundme for her funeral service, please donate if you can at this link: Go Fund Me
